Trefecta: a New Bike, a New Direction in Mobility

Trefecta Bike

I’ve spent many years riding and racing bicycles and motorcycles. Chances are if it has handlebars I have ridden it. So when something new comes out I really look for the difference in performance. This new vehicle by Trefecta is outright frightening considering how far we have come with electric bicycles in such a short time.

As technology keeps moving ahead with electric motors and light weight carbon fiber, we are starting to see a new line of vehicle, something between a motorcycle and bicycle has emerged. It’s a hybrid of sorts with human and electric motors. It’s more or less the moped of a modern era.

At speeds of 40mph (60mph if you pedal in addition) means you’re traveling at a serious rate and with a range of 100km (60 Miles) means that you’re also going long distance too.

The most impressive aspect is the performance, especially when you factor in that it is only 80 lbs. in weight. Let me give you some perspective to go with that. While a 250CC Dirt bike has around 50HP, it also weighs in at 280lbs! A smaller bike means better control and less weight to carry. It might even become a new class of racing vehicle.

Hardware

Trefecta Pedal

The Trefecta is literally filled with the best of everything inside, starting with 7075 aluminum and carbon frame, Hope V4 calipers, a floating ventilated 203mm disc brake and 26” carbon fiber rims. It’s like the designers simply picked the best of everything they could find for parts. It’s also fully connected via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and has an iPod connection to keep your jams going.

Performance

  • Peak Motor Power (depending on model and country): 4kW
  • Top Speed: 70 km/h (43 MPH)
  • Cruise Speed: 55 km/h (34 MPH)
  • Range (without pedaling): 100 km (62 Miles)
  • 350lb payload capacity (including rider and cargo)

Price

Starting price is $25k. So don’t expect to see these replacing cars on the street yet. Expect to see Trefecta bikes around the most prestigious of places like the yacht club or race track.

The Future of Bikes

Trefecta Battery

The best part about exotic vehicles like this is that while they simply aren’t obtainable by the regular public, innovation pushes the limits of the current technology. As batteries and materials improve, those innovations trickle down into the common consumer market. Much like when NASA or Tesla invents or optimizes technology, these changes end up in places like your common car. Without these costly R&D designs, technology moves ahead at a slow pace. Innovation is costly. Companies like this pave the way on the road to the future.
