The Seagate Expansion STKP16000400 is a 16TB desktop external hard drive for people who need substantial space to store, consolidate, or back up files from a Windows PC or Mac. It connects over USB 3.0 and uses an included power adapter.
Recommended For
- Desktop users making large, periodic backups of a PC or Mac can use the 16TB capacity for bulk local copies and file consolidation; keep another copy of important data, since one drive alone is not redundant backup.
- Home media collectors and data hoarders who want a large, directly connected archive for movies, photos, and other files can benefit from its high capacity and strong sequential transfer performance for an HDD.
- Users transferring large files or running background copies from a fixed desk can use it as high-capacity external storage; a professional review measured nearly 280MB/s in sequential transfers on a 16TB test unit.
- People adding storage to a home computer for files they access occasionally can use it to free space on the internal drive without replacing or opening the computer.
Real-World Use Scenarios
- Back up a computer’s large photo, video, and document folders by copying them to the drive; it gives a desktop user a separate local copy without filling the computer’s internal storage.
- Keep a large media library—such as video files, music, or archived projects—in one place; when connected to a computer, the drive can provide storage for browsing or streaming those files.
- Move files from several older drives onto one larger storage location; this can simplify access to accumulated backups and archives, though the drive must be connected to a computer to access them.
- Store files that are used occasionally, such as completed video projects or older computer backups; the desktop drive offers a place to keep them outside the computer, but it needs its power adapter and a USB connection when in use.
- Add storage to a home media or file server by connecting the drive to a computer that hosts the files; it can serve as attached storage, but it is not a standalone network drive.
